Acer AO532h-2067 10.1-Inch Matrix Silver Netbook - Up to 10 Hours of Battery Life

Acer AO532h-2067 10.1-Inch Matrix Silver Netbook - Up to 10 Hours of Battery Life Review

The Acer Aspire One 532H is sold in many versions, with some vendors, such as Costco, having unique versions. The major differences are 160GB hard drives versus 250GB hard drives, and "regular" six cell batteries versus long-life six cell batteries. All current versions should have Windows 7, instead of the older versions' Windows XP.

I bought the Costco version, which comes with a two year warranty, instead of the one year warranty, a 160GB hard drive, and the long-life battery. I have been able to routinely get 8 hours to 9 hours of use before needing to charge the battery. The ultra-light weight of the 532H and its slim body make it easy to carry in my briefcase all day.

When I stop for coffee, it quickly identifies available wireless internet connections. I use it primarily for e-mail and checking the news headlines. However, although the keyboard is a bit cramped, after some time to adjust, typing shorter documents is not difficult. The screen is sharp and easy to read.

The power pack and charger is smaller and lighter than usual, so bringing it along for a week-end trip is not a burden. If the battery is totally drained, it fully recharges in two to four hours, depending on whether you are using the computer while it is charging.

When I have a fast internet connection (1.3 mbps or faster) the 532H will play back TV shows on Hulu smoothly, although sometimes it is necessary to pause the show for a few minutes to enable the memory buffer to fill up.

Using the Windows Task Manager to monitor CPU use and memory use indicates that memory use tops out at 700 megs to 800 megs with eight or ten Browser tabs open, and also running another program, such as listening to music on Pandora or watching a TV show on Hulu. I suspect a program such as PhotoShop would be very slow with just one GB of memory however. The CPU sometimes tops out at 100% load, indicating that the CPU, not the 1GB of memory, is the primary cause of the computer running slowly during some tasks.

There is no reason to upgrade to two GB of RAM if you will be using the Aspire for e-mail, browsing the news, listening to music, or watching videos on Hulu. I purchased a mini-DVD unit so that I could watch movies. Using Windows Media Player, there was a great picture, but no sound. I downloaded the free VLC video software, and movies then played fine, with nice stereo sound. Then I tried Windows Media Player again, and it was also playing DVD movies with sound...I'm guessing that when I downloaded the VLC video player, it included an audio codec that Windows 7 was missing.

If I were going on a trip for a few weeks, the Aspire, its charger, and the mini-DVD player would provide me with a complete computer system that weighs less than a total of five pounds...light enough to keep with you all day. Folks would have laughed ten years ago if you said that someday you would be able to buy a computer that weighed less than three pounds and cost less than 0. A real bargain.

Best one yet - Cooperstown39 - United States
This is my second netbook and very impressed. Most of these netbooks are very similar in performance and the selection really comes down to personal preferences. A few things I liked;

- The touch pad has a "bump" surface rather than being smooth

- Keyboard layout is ideal for touch typists (my other netbook is nice but it drives me crazy with the right shift key being smaller and offset)

- Screen is bright and can be easily adjusted to improve battery life

- As mentioned in other reviews, the battery life is great

- Most important for me was easy access to the memory and hard drive. This netbook has two access doors on the bottom so you can upgrade the memory or hard drive without having to take it completely apart (unlike the new Asus models)

I have upgraded the hard drive to an 80G SSD and the memory to 2G. It will never compete with a loaded laptop or desktop but it is pretty fast (for being a netbook) and easily handles MS Office.

The only item which causes some problem is the AC adapter. It has a rather large plug and will not fit in tight places (like some of the convenience outlets on the desks in hotel rooms). However, this is just a minor inconvenience.

Overall, this is a great netbook and plan to purchase a second one for a famiy member.

nice little unit. - J. Skilton - Portland, OR USA
.
Got the XP version, because the whole -idea- of win7 'starter' just makes me angry. But specifically, the in-ability to extend the desktop onto another monitor (without a paid upgrade) is a major drawback for a unit with a 10" screen. No such prob with the XP version, as is. Xp versions not available with >160Gb disk, so there's your tradeoff.

I seriously considered the ASUS brand, which is well reviewed and offers slightly more bang for the buck, but, I own other Acer products, and finally just went with the familiar brand. I like the color too, fwiw.

The unit was packaged in the familiar handle box and arrived a day early without any sign of mis-handling. Unpacking and setting up the unit was straight-forward. Deleted several 'free trial versions,' dug up our home network key, downloaded Firefox, AVG, and a Citrix client (that gets me on the company server), and went to work.

The screen is clear, bright, and very sharp. I had no trouble working with smaller text and images. Didn't hate the 'chicklet' keyboard either. I seem to be using only four fingers, but good speed and no more typos than usual.

XP recognized all the peripherals in the house, including two Canon printers, a chinese knockoff portable dvd drive, and multiple mice, keyboards and monitors. With mouse, keyboard and cheap 17" monitor, this netbook is a desktop replacement as powerful and useful as any laptop I've ever owned. Disconnect everything, and its a great deal more portable -- at less than half the price.

Only caveat is that I am not a gamer, so no comment there. The video and sound systems are plenty good for what I do. Before it recognized my crappy old 17" monitor for the wimp it is, it was offering me some very large-pixel resolution choices.

Enthusiastically recommended.

The Perfect Compromise - D. Martin -
When I shopped for this netbook, it was a long process. There are so many different configurations and price points available. What I finally did was to write a wish list by order of priority with price obviously being the deciding factor. What finally made me decide on this netbook was that it had all of my high priority criteria and I didn't pay 30 to 50% more to get what I really din't need (bigger hard drive,or windows 7 home premium etc)
The following was my wish list in order with comments on this unit.
Long battery life, (6 cell battery doesn't stick out of the rear like a growth. About 10 hours as advertised!)
N450 processor minimum (not the N270 or 280 which cuts your battery life about 25%).
Reasonable hard drive. (160 GB is hard to fill but I can always upgrade later reusing the 160 in an enclosure.)
Integrated Bluetooth, (no dongles and much better software. Function key on and off with indicator LED. Wireless mouse (any track pad used more than a couple of minutes drives me nuts), easy PDA syncing plus lan sharing if no wifi, using your headset from your cell phone etc. Bluetooth is a very useful feature that you will find more useful as you go. It works great with all of my devices and it shares nicely. The software and the hardware was integrated by the manufacturer to work together properly and I would go this route than go for the dongles that everyone seems to be complaining about. BTW, if something physically jars a dongle hard enough,it could destroy the computer board).
A good display (for one person viewing).
A reasonable keyboard.
XP is actually a bonus. (Works great on these smaller processors and it's a lot cheaper than 7 home premium!)
webcam and microphone (work very well with Skype etc).
SDHC card slot (don't have Sony stuff so I am not paying for the extra slots I won't use).

Purchased with Microsoft Bluetooth mouse, works great but wish it was a little shorter for packing alongside the Acer. When you are travelling, you end up using the mouse in locations that a lesser or wired mouse wouldn't be comfortable with. Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 Mac/Windows
Memory upgrade. Probably didn't need it in hindsight but it installed easily. Crucial 2GB 256Mx64PC2-5300 CT25664AC667 DDR2 200-Pin SODIMM Laptop Memory

In the end, it had all what I wanted at a good price. Quality was perfect with no issues with the hardware or software. (have edited out reference to not having 'n' wireless. It does! thanks D.Houghton)

Lenovo S10-2 10.1-Inch Pink Netbook - Up to 6 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Starter)

Lenovo S10-2 10.1-Inch Pink Netbook - Up to 6 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Starter) Review

With the S10-2 Lenovo played a game of give and take.

On the outside, the netbook looks and feels cheap. Everything is plastic -- even the metal looking bits. This makes for a very light netbook, and one that can survive a drop without much damage [speaking from experience]. Even the decorative colors look like a half-hearted attempt at dressing this device up. Finally, the battery has a hump in it that allows device to sit at an angle. This is a great feature because it allows the netbook too cool efficiently, but at the same time makes S10-2 a bit thick. If aesthetics are important to your computing devices this might not be the netbook for you.

The inside bits show where Lenovo paid attention. The keyboard, although not full size, is large enough type comfortably on, and the keys have excellent tactile feedback. The screen is glossy (but not overwhelmingly), responsive, and bright. My eyes say image quality on the screen isn't as good as my Macbook Pro or Macbook, but on par with my Dell E6500. The camera is a 1.2 megapixel device with great image quality. The Intel GMA950 Graphics is plenty of GPU to do what this netbook is designed to do; surf the web, read e-mail, and video conferencing. Netbooks and laptops often exhibit signal interference from their own componentry when you listen to audio with good quality headphones/earbuds -- not so with Lenovo S10-2. The audio components are excellent, even the tiny speakers perform well; in fact I would say the audio is better quality than all three of my afore mentioned laptops. Wired and wireless networking is just as fast and stable as all my other mobile networking devices. Finally, the N270 processor can perform all these tasks without the netbook feeling sluggish (if you use the correct OS), thanks to it's dual core nature.

However, where the S10-2 falls flat is the choice in Operating Systems. I am a fan of Windows 7; it's a solid operating system, and I enjoy using it on my Dell. However the "Starter" edition of Windows 7 is simply something Microsoft created to so you would pay for upgrade. It is too limited (unless your an advanced user, you won't even be able to change your desktop background) it wants far more processor, more GPU, and more memory than this netbook can provide. A memory upgrade to 2GB will keep you from wanting to pull your hair out, but the real solution here is to change your OS to something designed to run small devices [not a task for non-technical users].

Pleased with the netbook but most of all the service was good - Andrew W. Cameron - Pensacola, Florida
The computer was bought for my wife as she loves to play cards and this computer does the job. But more important then it works is that the service from Amazon was very good. The computer arrived in two days, we are both pleased.

Amazing! - Ipek Ozay -
Before I start using Lenovo Ideapad S10-2 I would ever never expect this quality. It's more than amazing.. First of all forget about recharging your computer.Battery life is more than 6 hours. When it's not in use I put on hibernate, then battery lasts all day long. Very light, I carry everywhere with me in my small purse. Monitor a little bit small, but if you don't have vision problem it's not a big deal at all. About handling if you buy from Amazon you must expect a long waiting time. I had to buy from Amazon to be able to use Amazon card, I have waited about 3 weeks to get it, right after this I bought another regular laptop; even though I paid extra 2 day delivery fee $ 19.80, still I got it in 1 week. For the product it's strongly recommended..

ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1008HA-MU17-BU 10.1-Inch Blue Netbook - 6 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Starter)

ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1008HA-MU17-BU 10.1-Inch Blue Netbook - 6 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Starter) Review

This is a wonderful netbook. I bought this cause I needed to do work when I am stuck at school and didn't want to drive back home waste gas. It does everything I need it to: surf the web, write documents, email, and it's portable. I use this laptop as a means to do work at school since I didn't want to buy a regular laptop. I already have a desktop at home, so I use this netbook as a means of doing SMALL AMOUNTS of works while at school.

Because it's a netbook I know not to expect it to work like a Macbook or any other fast-pace, high-capacity laptop. It's not meant for that type of functionality.

Bottom line: This is an awesome laptop if you are looking for something to do your work at a coffee shop like read and write documents and emailing.

It is not for those of you who tend to have more than 3+ programs running. Here's a quick analogy: netbooks are like little kids, if you ask them to carry an item for you they will only probably carry one or two items no more than 5 pounds. Regular laptops are adults who can carry about 5+ items about 50 pounds (depending on the adult) and not have a problem.

The processor (Intel Atom) on this netbook will not match up to regular processors like Core 2 Duos.

Do not buy this laptop if it's going to be your ONLY laptop. Buy it for convenience and portability.

ASUS wireless won't work - M. Small - Waikoloa, Hawaii USA
I bought the ASUS eePC 1 1/2 years ago. I left right away for Europe. When I got there the wireless worked intermittenly. I discovered that it would only work with unsecured wireless networks. If I had to use a password it wouldn't work. When I got home I tested it at my son's house and mine by securing then unsecuring the networks. The computer reacted the same as in Europe. I sent the computer to ASUS to remedy the problem. They kept it for a long time and sent it back programed in Chinese. No one could help me over the phone to change it back to English (the choice was no longer available on the computer) so I had to send it back to the factory. This time it came back after my warrantly had expired. It now spoke English but the problem with the wireless had not been repaired. Every time I call ASUS I get a different reason as to why it acted like that. The latest technician told me that it was the servers fault, nevermind that I had the same problem with multiple servers in multiple countries. I have unsecured my home network so I can use this computer but it is worthless for the purpose I bought it for which was to travel with it. ASUS has responded poorly to this problem and I would not recommend their products to anyone.

OK, but some things you need to know - R. Franklin - Roanoke, VA United States
This netbook is lightweight and thin, even by netbook standards. Quick setup after powering on. I did elect to upgrade the OS to Windows 7 Home Premium. It is simply a key code to enter as the program is already loaded on the computer. I have not had any problems so far with the computer or software. I will say that finding anything on ASUS's website requires a bit of searching. A few concerns about the side doors to access ports. They seem very cheap and forsee them breaking off with repeated use.

This is my first netbook so I suffered a learning curve about problems you can encounter. Read the specs very closely. First, this netbook only has 2 USB ports. This can present a problem if you purchase an external DVD/CD drive that is solely USB powered. A lot of these drives require 2 USB ports to operate, leaving you with no other port. You cannot power these devices off of a hub. One seriously misleading spec is that the netbook is upgradable to 2 GB. Well yes it is, but not by the user unless you are very techinically capable of computer repair and want to void your warranty. So don't buy that 2 GB memory upgrade that pops up as a suggested additional purchase from Amazon.

If I had this to do over, I think I would have gone with Acer or HP. Both seem to be a little sturdier in their construction. I don't have a lot of faith that the body of the ASUS is going to hold up.

Never Buy an Asus equipment! - Norberto Almeida - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
I bought an ASUS EeePC 1008ha in July, 2009 and less than a month later I started to have problems with this computer:
First Problem: The touch pad stopped working
Second Problem: After I upgraded to 2 Gb RAM, the computer restarted several times during the day by itself
Third Problem: motherboard is dead

I work as a teacher at MBA's course and I experienced bad moments using this computer during the classes.
My experience with Asus support service was the worst one I've ever had in my entire life.

Make you a favor: Never buy an Asus equipment! I won't buy.

Sony VAIO VPC-W211AX/T 10-Inch Brown Netbook - Up to 8 Hours of Battery Life

Sony VAIO VPC-W211AX/T 10-Inch Brown Netbook - Up to 8 Hours of Battery Life Review

I bought this netbook for my wife and the two deciding factors were the high-resolution screen (1366x768) and its build quality. I checked out a lot of other netbooks and most have lower resolution screens and are built with too much plastic that makes them feel cheap. This Vaio is solid - it feels like a mini version of Apple's classic 12" Powerbook (without the heft). The screen is also fantastic in its brightness and clarity. It's perfect for movie viewing, web browsing and even book reading. The clarity makes reading a Kindle book a breeze even though horizontal mode isn't the ideal way to read an electronic book. The sound is excellent when using headphones but the built-in speakers are worthless, which seems to be typical of most notebook computers.

I'm a Windows XP user so it did take me some time to get used to Windows 7 but I haven't had any problems especially with its wireless capabilities. Connecting to my secure home network took a few minutes to set up and my connection is rock-solid. The Vaio is also quieter than other laptops I've used. You'll still hear the fan but it's more of a whooshing sound so it never really gets annoying. The bottom of the computer does warm up but it's nothing out of the ordinary.

On the downside, the chiclet-style keyboard is a bit cumbersome to use especially if you have larger hands but I was able to adapt and my wife doesn't have any problems with it. I do wish the right shift button was bigger and there were dedicated volume buttons (you have to use FN button + key or the on-screen slider for volume adjustment). We were not able to get the trackpad scrolling feature adjusted to our liking (scrolling was never smooth) so we ended up turning it off. This is one area that could use a major revamping especially when compared to an Apple Powerbook trackpad. The large capacity battery mars the sleek design of the machine but it's hard to argue with 8 hours of battery life and the resulting angle does help with typing.

The Vaio W does have some minor quirks but they're not enough to overshadow the build quality and exceptional screen that's hard to find in other netbooks.

Buyer Beware: Flimsy Junk - Dr. R. W. Mehler - Los Angeles, CA
More flimsy junk from Sony. They used to be a good company but now produce expensive landfill material.

Beware: Sony is very very stingy about fixing their flimsy junk under warranty. They do not stand behind their products like better companies. Also note that when trying to contact customer support, they ONLY provide a phone number, no email or even street address, and they will NEVER put anything into writing. When your Sony trash fails, all that happens is endless circular conversations with useless minimum-wage customer service children who have no authority to do anything.

Only buy this or other Sony junk if you enjoy burning hundred dollar bills.

does what it should do - K. LEE - PA, USA
The first impression is its nice appearance. I've never had any netbooks before but this product from sony is quite satisfactory. The speed is acceptable. Still some people argued with the windows 7 starter edition but I would say it's designed for light computing and web surfing and it actually does a good job on these things. If you are looking for a second pc (or laptop) and this one might fit your need. However if you expect it for primary use then it might disappoint you. To share my personal use, I have a mac desktop at home and that serves as my primary computer. And when I go outside I only bring this little tiny creature with me. As long as the internet access is available I can always connect back to my home desktop and use some remote desktop to do whatever heavy tasks on the main computer. And if you really dislike windows, I'd recommend you to try ubuntu, a free linux os. I'm currently having dual systems on this vaio and honestly I'm on ubuntu most of the time. The system interface is neat and very efficient in doing those less heavy things. Also if you're worried about whether one GB RAM is enough to run win 7, using ubuntu can definitely be a nice alternative.

Very Nice Netbook - ShaggyDog - Irving, TX United States
Things we love about this netbook are:
1. It is lightweight
2. superb screen resolution
3. has enough juice to do what's meant to do
4. keyboard is very nice to type on
5. it is NOT sluggish.

Works well. - J. FILHO - Brazil
Works well. The design looks good. I put extra memory, change the original 1 gb for 2gb but I think Windows 7 is a little "heavy".

ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005PE-MU17-BK 10.1-Inch Black Netbook (Up to 11 Hours of Battery Life)

ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005PE-MU17-BK 10.1-Inch Black Netbook (Up to 11 Hours of Battery Life) Review

I did a lot of research before buying a netbook. I was specifically looking for a lightweight, portable Windows netbook with enough power that I could actually do stuff other than surf the net on it. I've had my Asus Eee PC for about 4 days now, and I love it. First, I definitely recommend getting the white case. The black edge around the monitor really picks up fingerprints and the white case doesn't at all. I can imagine the black/darker cases look really dirty really quickly just because of smudges. In addition to the white case, it's nice looking, overall. Aesthetics aside, it's been incredibly easy to use. I had next to no difficulty adapting to the keyboard - the keys are big enough to type quickly and easily and they've got a nice depth to them that makes you feel comfortable that you're actually hitting keys. I also thought the function key secondary keys and shortcuts were set up really intuitively and conveniently. The screen is nice and clear, and I've been able to read, play a few games, and do work without much trouble. I would never use this as a primary computer but for doing work in a coffee shop while I'm waiting around, it's been perfect. In terms of speed, I haven't even upgraded to 2 GB of RAM yet, and I've been able to run a lot with no trouble. Of course, the first thing I did was run CCleaner to remove a bunch of extraneous startup processes. After that, I've been able to run Google Chrome to surf the internet and a couple of Microsoft Office programs simultaneously without too much lag at all. I'm sure it'll be even better once I get the extra RAM. The battery life is also awesome. I had it fully charged this morning and then did about 2.5 hours of word processing and 2.5 hours of watching netflix streaming videos and still have about 40% of the battery life left. The 11 hours of battery life might be a bit of an exaggeration, but I think even about 8 hours of moderately - highly process intensive battery life is pretty fantastic.

I highly recommend this netbook if you're looking for something portable but functional.

Ovrerall a good buy - Phillip W. Hunter - temecula, ca, US
I purchased this Netbook to replace and aging IBM Thinkpad 600X. I looked at several Netbooks by Toshiba, Dell, HP, and Lenovo. After reading 100's of reviews on Amazon, I decided upon this Asus unit, based upon price vs performance. Overall, I am happy with it. My wife is a very good touch typist and is very finicky about her keyboard, and she finds this one to be completely acceptable, which is high praise. Like many others who posted here, I am very happy I got the white one because the thing finger prints like crazy. Unlike some others, I am perfectly happy with Windows 7 Starter. I find it more than adequate for this machine and what I use it for. One issue I had, was that after I loaded my firewall, virus scan, spam blocker, etc., I found that 800 meg of the 1 gig of RAM was used up and the machine slowed down considerably, I upgraded to 2 gig of RAM and added a 4 gig SD-HC card so I could use Ready Boost. These changes improved the performance significantly. I am not seeing anywhere near the 11 hour battery life claimed, and I did charge it for 12 hours before use. I am getting 5 to 8 hours which is plenty for my purposes. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because I think it should come with 2 gig of RAM standard because of all of the protective software that needs to be installed these days.

    Sturdy!!! - Joshua J. Giffin -
I have had this net book almost a year, and it is very reliable and sturdy. That is why I am writing this review, tonight I accidentally knocked it off the table (at least 4 feet high) to the hard/linoleum floor, and thought it was done, for sure. But it turned right back on. I could not believe it. So I pulled up Amazon to spread the word. I think if it had been an HP or Dell it would be in many pieces right now.
This is the first review I have written, because I can not believe how well built this net book is!!!

    Asus EeePc 1005PE-MU17-WT 10.1 - O. J. Oshin - Lagos, Nigeria
When i saw my dad's acer netbook, i decided there and then that i must also get a netbook. However, being the diligent type, i spent weeks on amazon reading reviews of several netbooks as well as researching generally on the internet. Eventually i settled for the Asus Netbook, purely based on the good reviews i read about the product. I have used the netbook for the past 2weeks and i have this much to say. It is a very cute (especially the white one), all my colleagues were thrilled when they saw it. The keyboard is great and very comfortable. I had to change the RAM from 1Gb to 2Gb to achieve better performance. However, one major flaw i noticed is same one that some people have complained of previously. Which is the blurring of the screen without any prompting. This has happened twice and each time i had to forcefully shut down the system and put it on again.

Overall, this is a cute product and i would update my review in another month's time
